Some might also suggest using OLE or some other data access mechanism in C# which doesn't really work either since we're seeing this in our unmananged C++codebase and I was just able to easily duplicate the behaviour in C#. Schema isn't an appealing alternative either. Staying with the older driver isn't an option as we're trying to move away from that driver since it does not support TLS 1.2. Obvious answers are to stay with the "SQL Server" driver and change the column to a non (max) type.

I am only seeing this issue with drivers other than the ancient "SQL Server" driver.
